The idea of devotion or praying makes some people uneasy because they equate it with blind faith and mindless submissiveness. However, it does not have to be like that. It is, in fact, a positive attitude: to be devoted to one’s family, friends, or work is to have love, care and responsibility. In this sense it means going beyond our usual narrow, self-centred thoughts and concerns, and dedicating our energy to others.

A prayer, as you can see, is an act. Prayer is not the mechanical repetition of words but an opening of the heart to communicate with our true nature. To pray means to meditate in its most basic sense. To surrender conscious to unconscious. To speak with oneself with utmost honesty. In a world, where we constantly chase things and people, and distance ourselves from our inner selves, prayers help us bridge that gap. They make us humble, by reminding us of our smallness in a few quiet moments. Praying is an experience without which all other life experiences may not be fully realised.

The practice of prayer meditation

How can we combine the two — prayers and meditation practice? In some cases, we may not have to. If you are having a meditative experience while praying, you should continue on that path. If, on the other hand, that is not the case, you should consider the idea. Similarly, if you are not a religious person or do not believe in prayers, you should explore the possibilities. In either case, the below points will help you in pursuing this path:

  • Sit in a comfortable position, with your back straight, and let your body relax. Spend some time letting your mind settle down in the present moment.
  • Close your eyes and breathe gently.
  • Think of something and someone for which you can find devotion in your heart. It can even be the universe itself.
  • Lower your head to express your gratitude. You can fold your hands if that comes naturally.
  • Focus your attention on the object of devotion. Direct all your energy towards it.
  • Complete the prayer by saying thank you.

It is fine if you don’t feel any faith. In the course of time, you will feel the effects of this practice. The important thing is to not force yourself and ease into a practice. Thank you for your efforts.
