Why do we write? In simple words, to express ourselves. Therefore, it is not only desirable but also necessary too that we focus on this aspect of writing. So, let’s explore a few key elements that add clarity to our writing.

Structure of the sentence:

Write a sentence in the simplest and the clearest way possible. That involves following the suitable grammar structure. Weed out all the unnecessary words or phrases. Now, if you want to stress on a particular idea, then you should insert that fancy word or phrase. In most cases, you won’t. Consider the sentence below.

I am trying to look for a job so that I can make some decent amount of money.

Let’s convey the same idea in simpler terms.

I am looking for a job to make some money.

Or, you may write…

I am looking for a job.

That works too depending on the context of the conversation.

Choice of words:

Some people would ask you to use simple words, some difficult ones. The trick is a bit different. We don’t need simple or difficult words but some specific words to convey an idea. Precision is the key in good writing. That does not mean that you use certain jargons all the time. No. You pick words which are understandable, part of your reader/listener’s parlance.

Take a look at the quote below. It’s from Steven Pinker who is well known for his clear and concise writing. Notice the highlighted words.

It’s natural to think that living things must be the handiwork of a designer. But it was also natural to think that the sun went around the earth. Overcoming naive impressions to figure out how things really work is one of humanity’s highest callings.

Try a simple exercise now. Replace the highlighted words or phrases with those of your choice. See how it impacts you when you read the same quote again.

Be a teacher:

As a writer, we must never forget that we are telling something new (fresh information or perspective) to our readers. Which is exactly what a teacher does. So, make sure that you explain your idea as patiently as a teacher does. That will move you towards clear communication and when you pair that with being efficient with words, you get clarity in your writing. Below is a quote by Alain de Botton which explains an idea how a good teacher would.

If we cannot always be entirely sane in our relationships, the kindest thing we can do for those who care about us is to hand over some maps that try to chart and guide others through the more disturbed regions of our internal world.

Now, follow the above principles and write a few sentences. Good luck!
